Marcus Jones MP has expressed his concern today at Labour’s backing for a report calling for tax hikes on family homes and single people across Nuneaton.
Labour’s Shadow Minister, Tessa Jowell, has backed the report, which puts forward policy proposals including ‘property value tax’ and the ‘abolition of council tax concessions for single occupation’, which would represent a massive increase of more than 33 per cent in council tax for single elderly pensioners, single parents and other adults who live on their own.
Commenting, Marcus Jones, the MP for Nuneaton, said:
‘Under Labour, council tax in Nuneaton increased by 106%. Now they want to hike prices even more by backing a report calling for higher council tax on single people, and higher taxes on family homes.
‘People should not be taxed or bullied out of homes that they have worked hard to pay for. Household budgets do not need another generation of Labour taxes.
‘The Government has recently announced a repeat of the council tax freeze which last year saved residents in Nuneaton an average of up to £77. Our FirstBuy scheme is helping first-time buyers get on the housing ladder, and our National Home Swap initiative will allow social tenants to move home without losing their security of tenure.’
