Following his audacious bid to entice Marks and Spencer to return to the town, Marcus Jones, the town’s MP, has been told by M&S bosses that the company will not be returning at this time.
M&S had originally discussed the prospect that the former Woolworths, now TJ Hughes, store may be suitable for them to remain in the town, at the time they decided to close their Market Place store. When Marcus became aware of the tragic news that TJ Hughes were to close he decided to test the water and see if M&S would have any interest in a return.
Commenting on his approach to M&S, Marcus said: “I emailed M&S and asked if they might consider using the site for a new store in Nuneaton, as I know they had previously considered it. I urged them to bear in mind that it is in one of the best retail positions in the town and has been extensively refurbished. I also reminded them of their previous interest.
“Unfortunately, M&S has informed me that the site no longer meets their criteria and is not something they are interested in progressing, which is a real shame. At present M&S has no plans for a return to Nuneaton but on a positive note they have said they will consider new development opportunities in Nuneaton if they should arise.”
“Although it isn’t the response I was hoping for, I don’t think it has done any harm to make contact with M&S so that they know how keen the town is to see them return as soon as possible.”
