Local MP Marcus Jones has today pledged to fight to keep Weddington in the Nuneaton parliamentary constituency at the next General Election.
Following the recent proposals for new parliamentary constituencies put forward by the independent boundary commission Marcus has today spoken of his concern at their proposal to split the Weddington Ward away from the rest of Nuneaton.
Marcus is fully supportive of the reasoning behind the boundary review and is keen to see fewer MPs which will save taxpayers millions of pounds. He is also keen to see fairer parliamentary constituencies so each MP will represent a similar number of electors in the House of Commons.
Whilst understanding that the boundary commission has to organise new parliamentary constituencies based on the number of electors, Marcus’ dismay at the prospect of losing Weddington from the Nuneaton constituency means that he will now formally make representation to the boundary commission to ask them to reconsider their proposal.
Commenting on the review, Marcus said: “Neither historically, geographically or practically does it make sense to omit Weddington from Nuneaton. Weddington has been an intrinsic part of the Nuneaton constituency since it was formed in the early part of the 20th Century so on an historical point it would now seem odd to pair Weddington with North Warwickshire. It is also wedded geographically firmly within the Nuneaton boundary.
“However, most importantly, on a practical level, the way in which Weddington Ward has evolved means that its boundary cuts through the middle of St Nicolas Park housing estate so it would be extremely confusing to people that despite living on the same estate they would not be in the same constituency. Furthermore, the ward boundary even cuts through a small close in St Nicolas Park Drive. It would therefore be absurd for half of a tiny close to be represented by the Nuneaton MP and for the other half to be represented by the MP for North Warwickshire.
“I will be making my view clear to the boundary commission and calling for Weddington to stay in the Nuneaton constituency. I would call on the people of Weddington to write to the boundary commission to keep Weddington in Nuneaton.”
