Marcus has been the Member of Parliament for Nuneaton and the surrounding villages of Ansley, New Arley, Old Arley, Hartshill and Furnace End since 2010.  His victory in Nuneaton saw him become the first Conservative MP for the town since 1992. He was re-elected in May 2015, June 2017 and December 2019.

In 2005 Marcus was elected to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council and became Council Leader in 2008 before stepping down to stand for Parliament.

Since his election to Parliament in 2010, Marcus has shown a determination to support business and job creation. He was elected as Chairman of the All-Party Group for Town Centres in 2010. He was a member of the influential Back Bench Business Committee and the Administration Committee in the House of Commons in the last Parliament. Marcus sat on the Finance Bill Committee which scrutinised the Chancellor’s 2013 Budget and led a delegation of MPs who were successful in persuading the Chancellor to implement ‘above the line’ R&D tax credits. He has also been an influential voice in the campaign against fuel duty increases and the campaign to scrap the Beer Duty Escalator.

He served as a Small Business Ambassador for the Midlands, a position he was appointed to by the former Prime Minister, David Cameron.

In October 2013, Marcus was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. In April 2014, he was appointed PPS to the Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, the Rt. Hon. Sajid Javid MP.

Marcus was appointed to the Government by the-then Prime Minister, David Cameron, as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government, a position he retained following the appointment of Theresa May as the new Prime Minister in 2016 and again following the June 2017 General Election. 

In January 2018, Marcus was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party.

In July 2019, the incoming Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, appointed Marcus as a Government Whip.

In February 2020, Marcus was appointed Vice-Chamberlain of the Household - a senior Government Whip.  The Vice-Chamberlain's main roles are to compile a daily private report to the Sovereign on proceedings in the House of Commons and to relay addresses from the Commons to the Sovereign and back. 

In September 2021, Marcus was promoted to become Comptroller of HM Household, another ancient role within the Royal Household.  On state occasions the Comptroller (in common with certain other senior officers of the Household) carries a white staff of office and, in July 2022, promoted to Minister of State (Minister for Housing) in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

A further promotion occurred in October 1922 when Marcus was appointed Treasurer of HM Household (Deputy Chief Whip) and in March 2023 he was appointed as a member of the Privy Council.  Learn more about the Privy Council.

Personal
Marcus has lived in Nuneaton all his life. Marcus worked in the private sector for 16 years prior to his election to Parliament in May 2010. Marcus has run several successful small and micro businesses and for over a decade was Conveyancing Manager for Tustain Jones Solicitors, working in both Coventry & Nuneaton.

Education & Family
He grew up in Whitestone and went to both Whitestone and Chetwynd Schools before going on to St. Thomas More School and King Edwards VI College, all in Nuneaton.

Marcus is married to Suzanne and they have a son, Oliver, and daughter, Martha.  He has a number of hobbies including football and has played for a number of local Sunday league teams in the Nuneaton and district league. He is also an avid but long-suffering supporter of Coventry City and enjoys angling on the rare occasion when he has spare time.
