Marcus Jones has called for Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council to get tough with illegal traveller encampments and apply for a High Court Injunction to protect public open-spaces in the Borough.
“Our neighbours in Rugby, alongside many other local authorities, have shown that obtaining a High Court Injunction is an effective solution to the problem of illegal encampments.
“Once an injunction is in place, the occupation of public open-spaces without permission becomes a criminal offence and thus makes it easier and quicker to have the encampment moved. I welcome the fact that Nuneaton’s Conservative Councillors also support calls for a High Court Injunction and hope that the Labour-run Council will now act on a cross-party basis for the good of our community.
“Action is long-overdue - I have been calling on the Council to act since 2015 – they have power under legislation passed by the Conservative Government in 2014 – to prevent illegal encampments on public land.
“The Council must now act now, enough is enough, residents’ lives are being disrupted and significant amounts of council tax-payers money is being used to clean-up these illegal encampments.”
