Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones and the Leader of Warwickshire County Council today welcomed the Boundary Commission’s decision to include the Weddington ward in the Nuneaton constituency at the next General Election.
The boundary review is designed to reduce the number of MPs in the UK from 650 to 600 and to make Parliamentary constituencies of equal size. The Commission’s earlier proposal had suggested that Weddington should be transferred into the North Warwickshire constituency, moving it away from its traditional link within the Nuneaton constituency.
The move would have seen what the Nuneaton MP had described as “the absurd situation where the North Warwickshire and Nuneaton constituency boundaries would have met on St Nicolas Park estate, with residents on one side of a cul-de-sac on St Nicolas Park Drive represented by the Nuneaton MP and across the cul-de-sac represented by the North Warwickshire MP.”
Since the original proposal the Nuneaton MP has campaigned to keep Weddington in Nuneaton and has submitted written and verbal evidence to explain his views to the Boundary Commission.
Following the revision to the proposals the Nuneaton MP said: “I am delighted at the revision made by the Boundary Commission. The people of Weddington were quite perplexed at being put into another constituency given that Weddington is one of the oldest parishes of Nuneaton.
"We are not certain yet whether we will see the boundary changes implemented before the next General Election, although if we do we can now be more assured that Weddington will stay in Nuneaton regardless of any other changes.”
The Leader of Warwickshire County Council Alan Farnell who has represented Weddington for over 30 years said: “I am so glad that Boundary Commission has rethought its original proposals. As a resident of Weddington myself it would have been inconceivable for Weddington to be in any other constituency than Nuneaton.”
