Marcus Jones MP said “This is a very sad day. Over the last few months I have spoken to miners their wives, partners and girlfriends, and this news, though not unexpected will devastate many families.
“Since the fire Dan Byles and I have met weekly and at times daily with UK Coal, Union representatives, Ministers and the Pensions Regulator in order to give our fullest support to Daw Mill workers. We are glad that the Government are now proposing changes to the Pension Protection Fund that should help some workers who have long service.”
Dan Byles MP added “It is positive news that 120 Daw Mill workers were transferred to other mines, however it’s devastating for the remainder, and Marcus and I will continue to do all we can to support those now looking for work.
“We are also seeking an urgent meeting with the Coal Authority to see whether a positive use for the Daw Mill site can be brought forward for the benefit of local people. When you look at the jobs that have been created at Birch Coppice, Keresley and Bermuda every option for Daw Mill should now be explored.”
