Marcus Jones has been re-elected by fellow MPs to serve on the influential Back Bench Business Committee. He was first elected on Wednesday 16 May 2012.
The Committee is responsible for determining, on behalf of backbench members the business before the House for approximately one day each week. It was introduced by the Coalition Government as a means of providing backbench parliamentarians the opportunity to focus debates on particular topics. The most prominent example being the vote it forced on an in/out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.
Commenting on his re-election, Marcus said: “It is a privilege to have been re-elected to this Committee which gives backbench MPs a real voice in Parliament in determining what is debated.
“Many MPs have issues they are passionate about yet rarely have the opportunity to discuss these important issues during a focused debate. It is vital that debates through the back bench committee reflect the concerns of the wider electorate.”
