Marcus Jones, the MP for Nuneaton, has welcomed the latest unemployment figures which have fallen again.
In Nuneaton, unemployment is down to 4.7% since the General Election. This totals 2,120 unemployed claimants in the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics.
Nuneaton’s figures in June 2010 were the 207th highest, but in June 2012 the town was placed as the 316th highest out of the 650 UK constituencies, the lowest figures of unemployment since May 2010. Today, Nuneaton is 322nd highest showing that unemployment in the town continues to fall faster than in many other places in the UK.
Marcus has acknowledged that there is no room for complacency and hopes to be able to run another jobs fair after the successful event help with North Warwickshire & Bedworth MP Dan Byles last year. Marcus also believes that the government’s Work Programme and Apprenticeship initiatives are starting to have a positive effect.
Commenting on the figures, Marcus said: “I’m encouraged by the latest figures which have shown another reduction in unemployment in the town yet I know there is no room for complacency. The Government’s support for apprenticeship schemes has seen another 990 people gain apprenticeships this year. I know that the Work Programme, Youth Contract & Work Experience programme are helping people back into employment.
“Despite this good news, I know that there is no room for complacency. We have had the potential for job losses announced recently by Rolls-Royce at their Ansty plant and of course the loss of jobs at Jessop’s. As the MP for the town, I will be re-doubling my efforts to support local businesses and to help get people into work.
“The economy is still very fragile as the Government attempts to control the deficit it inherited, not helped by the recent bad weather, which will almost certainly hit the economy hard. However, there is reason to be cautiously optimistic about the broad direction of the economy which the latest job figures indicate.”
