Nuneaton’s MP Marcus Jones attended a summit chaired by the Prime Minister on 22 September to discuss the aftermath of the Scottish referendum.
The Prime Minister has spoken of his desire to have greater powers for English MPs when discussing matters affecting England. At the moment, MPs who represent areas in Scotland can vote on matters relevant only to England, but MPs for English seats have no say on matters devolved to the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood.
Commenting on the summit, Marcus said: “The summit was an opportunity to discuss the implications of the very welcome Scottish ‘No’ vote to independence and a chance to learn more about the important issue of the West Lothian Question.
“It is surely right that matters affecting England only should be voted on by MPs representing seats in England, just as it is in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland with their devolved powers.
“The Prime Minister is absolutely right to raise this issue. If he wanted to be partisan about this, he would not have campaigned so vigorously for Scotland to remain with the United Kingdom. When the Government is considering the enhanced devolution for Scotland, it is absolutely right that we look at ensuring that MPs in England vote on matters affecting England.”
