Nuneaton’s MP Marcus Jones recently led a delegation of senior Councillors and officials to meet with the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin MP, in Parliament to discuss the Nuneaton – Coventry rail upgrade, which includes a new station at Bermuda.
The meeting was arranged by the town’s MP following concerns that the project was being delayed again. Since 2010, Marcus has worked hard to help get the scheme on track and played a leading role in securing Government funding in 2012, following many years of the project being discussed.
The delegation included the relevant Portfolio Holders from Warwickshire County Council and Coventry City Council, together with officials from both Councils.
Commenting, Marcus said: “Despite the progress made since 2010 I felt that a meeting with the Secretary of State was necessary so that we could outline to him exactly where the scheme currently is locally and what the cause of the delay is.
“There are a number of highly technical and financial considerations that need to be taken into account by Government, yet I felt that the Transport Secretary had a good knowledge of the importance of this scheme both to Nuneaton and indeed to Coventry, and I’m now waiting to hear further from the Department for Transport. I want this scheme to happen as quickly as possible, and whilst progress is being made, it’s important that every effort is made to achieve this project as quickly as is practicable.”
