Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones has today written to the Under-Secretary of State for Transport Stephen Hammond to raise safety concerns around the recently remodelled junction where the A5 meets with The Long Shoot.

The letter follows concerns recently raised by constituents and correspondence between the MP and the Highways Agency who are responsible for the A5/A47 junction.

The southbound carriageway on the A5 was changed last year in an attempt to accommodate better traffic flows, with the removal of the feeder lane to turn right from the southbound A5 onto The Long Shoot.

Since the changes the local MP has received numerous contact from local residents living near the junction who have expressed safety concerns. In the last week he has received the worrying report of a car being written off in an accident at the spot in question.

After initial concerns were raised last year the Nuneaton MP wrote to the Highways Agency to express concern and ask how the changes would be monitored. Marcus now wants to see the monitoring period reviewed and the process expedited to make sure that serious injury or worse is not sustained at the Long Shoot.

Marcus said: “I have visited this junction and it seems apparent to me as a layman that there is some confusion for people turning right now that the feeder lane has now been removed.

"I understand the rationale put forward by the Highways Agency to try and improve traffic flows on the A5, that said that rationale should not be a priority over safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who also use the junction.

"I have therefore written to the Minister to see if the monitoring period following the work can be reduced and the junction reviewed more quickly to make sure that people’s safety is not put in unnecessary jeopardy."
