The leading local MP, Marcus Jones, has raised concerns about the safety of the M6 and has spoken about the “gridlock” experienced by Nuneaton people when the M6 is closed and traffic diverted.
Nuneaton’s voice in Parliament is concerned that the frequent accidents between junctions 1 and 4 of the M6 are causing traffic chaos for Nuneaton on such a regular basis that something must be done. Such are his concerns that he has asked for an urgent statement from the Government about the issue.
Marcus has spoken to many people who are fed up with the local chaos on Nuneaton’s road network as people regularly head from the closed M6 through Nuneaton to gain access to other motorways.
With weekly closures on the M6 Marcus says that more must be done to reduce the number of accidents on the busy stretch of motorway. He has welcomed the major improvements taking place at the Catthorpe interchange where the M6 merges into the M1 and meets the A14.
Speaking of his campaign Marcus said: “The debate over the Borough Plan and the knock-on effect on our roads seems to have encouraged people to raise concerns over the current gridlock which regularly envelops the town and other arterial routes on the outskirts of Nuneaton.
"The common cause of this traffic chaos is when the M6 is closed which seems to happen with some frequency.
"The safety of many of our motorways has been greatly improved with the managed motorway system such as the one operated on the busy M42, which has improved traffic flow and reduced accidents.
"I am keen to see a solution on the M6, which would, I am sure, see a vast improvement in safety, and much less traffic cutting through Nuneaton as a result.
"Gridlock is inconvenient, bad for the health of local people and bad for business in our area.”
