Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones today told the House of Commons of his concern for Nuneaton Rolls-Royce workers who work at Nuneaton, Ansty and Derby.
This comes following the announcement made by the company that they are to reduce their global workforce by 2,600 people in the next 18 months. It is not yet known where the jobs will be lost and Rolls-Royce have said that they hope any redundancies would be voluntary, but they did not rule out compulsory redundancies being made.
This news comes after the company have increased their UK workforce by 4,000 people over the last four years.
Marcus, who is a great supporter of manufacturing, has called upon the Government to help the company mitigate any job losses. He also asked for Government to work cross-departmentally to help those who may be affected by any decisions that are made by the company.
The leading local MP was pleased to hear that the Government have already put provision in place to work with the company and support those who may be affected by the job losses.
He was also told that the Government have set up a task-force to try and see that the skills of any workers made redundant are retained in the aerospace industry. The task-force made up of national and local partners is now in contact with Rolls-Royce and other potential employers.
Speaking of the news, Marcus said: “I am sure that many people working at Rolls-Royce will be rightly concerned about this announcement. I am pleased to have raised my concerns and am heartened by the immediate response that the Government seems to have made to support those people who will be affected.
“In an ideal world, I hope that Nuneaton people working for the company will not be involved, however it is not yet known who will be affected, but I believe that it’s important that I am able to express my support.”
