Nuneaton’s MP, Marcus Jones, has welcomed new figures showing that unemployment in Nuneaton has fallen by 54% over the last five years and wage growth continuing to out-pace inflation. There are now nearly 1,600 fewer people in Nuneaton claiming out of work benefits compared to 2010.
Youth unemployment has also fallen in the last year, with 176 fewer young people out of work. The figures for local youth unemployment are even more encouraging having seen a fall of a staggering 45% in the last year.
Nationally, long-term unemployment has fallen by more than 240,000 since 2010, to its lowest level in six years. Employment is at a record level for the UK and female employment is at a record level of 14.6 million, and a record rate of 68.8 per cent.
The figures also showed that average pay growth is at 2.9 per cent – the fastest rise since 2002 – while inflation was only 0.1 per cent, meaning hardworking people in Nuneaton have more money in their pockets; and youth unemployment has continued to fall – down 215,000 since 2010 – showing how this one nation government is ensuring the economic recovery is felt by all sections of society.
Commenting on the figures, Marcus said: “Overall, unemployment is falling here in Nuneaton and that is a real positive, particularly for our younger people, far more of whom are now in work than they were 5 years ago.
“I have spoken to several of our local leading employers here in Nuneaton and they are looking to take on more people locally, so I am very optimistic that the trend for falling unemployment will continue.
“I know from meeting previously unemployed people how life changing it is to find employment – it provides financial security for your family, and I will continue to do all I can as an MP to ensure that anyone who wants a job can find one.
“For those already in work, low inflation and the improvement in wages can only be positive.”
