Nuneaton’s MP, Marcus Jones, has written to the Leaders of Nuneaton Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council to call for the creation of a new cross-party working group in a bid to improve Nuneaton town centre.
The MP is keen for politics to be cast aside in favour of a cross-party group to ‘create a vision for the town centre’ and to ‘bring inward investment into our town.’
Commenting on the initiative, Marcus said: ‘I have written to both Cllr Harvey and Cllr Seccombe to urge that a cross-party group of senior Councillors be created to work together with me to create a vision for our town centre and to work toward attracting vital inward investment for Nuneaton.
‘It will not have escaped the notice of local people to see that there have been a number of retail business closures in Nuneaton. This is a complex issue that is not helped by internet shopping and out-of-town retail centres, but Nuneaton needs to punch its weight and to do things differently.
‘There are a number of examples of positive regeneration schemes that have helped local town centres, Hinckley being a local example. I want this to be a positive initiative, with buy in from both the Borough and County Councils at a senior level. It is vital that we get this right as Nuneaton has a lot going for it and we need to take full advantage of the opportunities that arise.
‘This is intended to be non-party political and I very much hope that local politicians can put politics to one side and work together in the interests of our town centre and local people. Local people are incredibly frustrated by a perceived lack of action over the future of our town centre and this is a real opportunity for every stakeholder to get involved and to make something happen.’
