Nuneaton’s MP Marcus Jones has cautiously welcomed new unemployment figures for the town which show that unemployment is slowly reducing.
Between May 2010 and December 2011 those unemployed as a percentage of those economically active fell from 5.9% to 4.9%. Figures show that Nuneaton is riding the tough economic times better than many, with the town falling 119 places down the UK unemployment league, from being the 207th highest for unemployment in the country in May 2010 to 326th position by last December.
Commenting on the figures, Marcus said: “Whilst there is still a long way to go to ensure a successful economic recovery, I am pleased that the figures are moving in the right direction in Nuneaton. Fewer people are unemployed now than there were eighteen months ago.
“A 1% reduction in unemployment is positive news for the town given the tough economic climate we are currently experiencing but we can’t be complacent and must do all that we can to create the right environment for businesses to get as many people as possible into work.”
