Marcus Jones MP has been elected by fellow MPs to serve on the influential Back Bench Business Committee. He was elected on Wednesday 16 May.
The Committee is responsible for determining, on behalf of backbench MPs the business before the House for approximately one day each week. It was introduced by the Coalition Government as a means of providing backbench parliamentarians the opportunity to focus debates on particular topics. The most prominent example so far being the debate and vote it forced on an in/out referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union.
Commenting on his election, Marcus said: “It is a privilege to have been elected to this Committee which gives backbench MPs a real voice in Parliament by determining what is debated.
“Many MPs have issues they are passionate about yet often don’t have the opportunity to discuss these important issues during Government time in the Commons. It is vital that debates through the back bench committee reflect the concerns of the wider electorate and I am delighted to have been elected to this role.
