Nuneaton MP Marcus Jones today backed a new construction industry campaign to get Britain building, and beat the recession.
Marcus attended the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham and signed a pledge to support Britain’s next generation of builders, on the site of the new £188m Library of Birmingham.
The pledge was recorded on a specially designed wall, built on the site by local apprentices. It is part of the Construction4Growth campaign, which brings together industry leaders and politicians to make the case that more construction work will help the UK economy grow.
Commenting, Marcus said: “Construction is the lifeblood of the UK economy – and is a significant employer of skilled workers in Nuneaton.
“I am proud to join Prime Minister David Cameron in supporting the Construction 4 Growth campaign.”
Simon Dingle from Carillion said: “The new Library of Birmingham is an incredible engineering and construction achievement, and one that would not have been possible without the highly successful collaboration between Birmingham City Council's Employment Access team and Carillion to recruit apprentices from the West Midlands.
“Support services and construction company Carillion is the largest employer of young apprentices in the sector with around 2,000 trainees at any one time.
“The new Library of Birmingham is an incredible engineering and construction achievement, and one that would not have been possible without skilled local Carillion apprentices from the West Midlands.”
Judy Lowe, Deputy Chairman of CITB-ConstructionSkills said: “The Construction4Growth campaign has been given a real boost by Marcus joining the Prime Minister and Housing Minister in pledging their support. The Construction4Growth campaign is recognition that there is nothing to be gained from accepting decline and stagnation as the norm. The construction solutions are out there and we are going to make sure we grab every opportunity available."
