Marcus Jones, the Member of Parliament for Nuneaton, has today welcomed news that his campaign to improve road safety at The Long Shoot junction with the A5 has been successful.
After more than 12 months of campaigning the hard working MP has received confirmation of the final design for The Long Shoot junction from the Highways Agency. The key change is the reintroduction of a dedicated lane to turn right into The Long Shoot. The works will also include the introduction of a signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing. These works are part of an improvement plan to improve traffic flow at The Long Shoot junction and Dodwells roundabout.
Since Marcus first raised this issue he has received dozens of letters from constituents all expressing great concern at the danger of turning right from the eastbound A5 into The Long Shoot. Marcus has taken several Ministers to the dangerous junction, including the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin. He was also recognised for his campaign to improve road safety at this junction by the road campaigning group BRAKE, who awarded him Road Safety Parliamentarian of the Month in April 2013.
Commenting, Marcus said: “This is great news. The highway planners have clearly listened to my concerns, the concerns of constituents and several people who live right on this junction. I have said from the outset that safety at this junction is paramount and we are fortunate that there have not been more serious accidents since the right filter lane was previously removed.
“This change is included in a package of works designed to improve traffic flows on the A5 and The Long Shoot and whilst it will undoubtedly cause disruption in the short term, I am sure that the outcome of a safer and more efficient junction will be worth it.”
The works should commence in September 2014.
