Marcus Jones, the MP for Nuneaton, has met with his the Planning Minister, Brandon Lewis MP, to urge him to investigate why the Borough Plan in Nuneaton is subject to significant delays. The MP has also written to the Minister to outline his concerns more formally.
This latest action by the town’s MP comes after it was recently revealed that the ruling Labour Group at the Town Hall confirmed that the response to the August 2013 public consultation would now be delayed until February 2015. He fears that by next February the goal posts will again move to avoid any debate before next year’s General Election.
Marcus believes that the delays are purely politically driven and he is concerned that local people’s views are being completely ignored.
The Government can investigate Councils to see why there are such delays with Borough Plans and the MP now wants the spotlight turned on Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.
Commenting on his latest attempt to bring fairness to the public over this long running saga, Marcus said: “The whole process of the Borough Plan has been a debacle and there are thousands of people who are fed up with the delays and the lack of information and transparency.
“There are now a number of speculative developments being built and planned across Nuneaton without the proper planning of local infrastructure to cope with new development.
“There needs to be a vision for Nuneaton that is fair, sustainable and that local people can buy into. At the moment, local people are having to suffer what is a shambles of a process because of the Labour Council. I have therefore asked the Planning Minister to investigate what is really going on behind the closed doors of the Town Hall.”
Adding, the Leader of the Conservative Group on the Borough Council, Cllr Kris Wilson, said: “Residents across the Borough are rapidly losing confidence in the Borough Plan and the planning process generally. We are seeing piecemeal development, particularly in the east of Nuneaton, over which the Council is demonstrating no control over because of their dilly-dallying over the Borough Plan. Is it that Labour are happy to say they have no control because then they can blame everyone else but themselves? This "not me guv" attitude is unfair on the residents who are having to live with the consequences of Labour's inaction."
